Wind power meets pedal power to launch East Lothian Sportive

7th July 2015 Fraser Bedwell

Against the backdrop of the windfarm, the cyclists called for people to sign up to the challenge and raise vital funds for Poppyscotland, which provides year-round support to the Armed Forces community in Scotland.

The signposted and timed, non-competitive event will depart from Prestonpans Community Centre and participants can choose between two routes – one at 45 miles and the other at 70 miles. Each route will take cyclists along the East Lothian coast to North Berwick before heading out into the scenic countryside around Gifford and Pencaitland before making their way back to Prestonpans. For those who like to push themselves, there are some testing climbs on the longer route.

Marianne Craig, Poppyscotland’s Events Fundraiser, said: “Poppyscotland relies entirely on the generosity of the public and we constantly strive to introduce fundraising events that will both capture the imagination of supporters and, importantly, raise much-needed funds. When we launched the East Lothian Sportive last year we were overwhelmed by the positive response from cycling fans. We have fine-tuned the route and we believe that this year’s event will be an even greater success, with something to suit cyclists of all abilities.”

The event is being supported by Crystal Rig Windfarm owner, Fred Olsen Renewables. This means that each participant’s full registration fee of £35 and additional sponsorship money will be used by Poppyscotland to provide a range of practical support to those who have served, those still serving, and their families.

Robert Wylie, operations manager at Crystal Rig said: “We are very pleased to be supporting this hugely worthwhile cause and urge others to sign up and get involved.  We will be encouraging members of our team to take part in the event later this year to help raise funds for our Service men and women.”

Poppyscotland would also like to thank Bramik Foods, Leith Cycle Co and Musselburgh Roads Cycling Club for their support.
