Enable veterans like Ronnie to live with dignityVeteran Ronnie Martin

Lance Corporal Ronnie Martin would still be a military man if it hadn’t been for a posting to Belize in 1991, which changed his life forever, when Ronnie was shot twice by a drug dealer.

He survived but only just, and in 1994 was granted an exemplary discharge. However, he was in near constant pain and had lost much of the strength in the left side of his body.  This left Ronnie unsteady and in danger of falls. Simple things such as climbing in and out of the bath had become increasingly difficult over the years.

And that’s where Poppyscotland stepped in. We gave Ronnie a grant towards building a walk-in shower in his bathroom. Ronnie describes the new bathroom as a “God-send”, adding: “I don’t think Poppyscotland knows what they have done for me in terms of peace of mind for now and the future.”

Help more ex-Service personnel like Kevin rebuild their lives

Life after the Scots Guards proved tough for Kevin Brooks. After a tour of Iraq, he was left suffering with depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Unable to cope, Kevin began drinking heavily and even contemplated suicide. Around this time Poppyscotland started to help.

Poppyscotland arranged for Kevin and his family to escape the stress of their daily lives with a couple of Poppy Breaks. The time away proved a real turning point for him. He decided to give up drinking and rekindle his passion for boxing.

We helped Kevin gain his coaching qualifications at a local boxing gym. Since then, he has gone from strength to strength. He has set up Scotland’s first boxing sessions for children with autism and hopes to open a boxing club for soldiers with PTSD.

“My life was crumbling. I felt I had nowhere to turn, but Poppyscotland helped me get back on track.” Kevin Brooks
